VOTE Tomorrow! [Nov. 1st, 2010|12:04 pm]
Michigan Homo What?!?!

TOMORROW is the 2010 election! VOTE. Projections say that only 50% will show up at the polls. What is up with that? Yes, the president is not on the ballot, but just about everything else is. This is one of the most important Michigan elections. We will be voting for a number of elected officials, including US Congressional seats, the Michigan gubernatorial race, the Secretary of State, The michigan Attorney General, Michigan State House, Michigan State Senate, members of the State Board of Education, local school districts, Regents to the University of Michigan, Wayne State University and Michigan State University, County Commissioners, Michigan Supreme Court Justices, Judges of the Court of Appeals, Judges of the Court of Circuit Court, statewide proposals and other local city and township officials. This election will determine which direction the state will go in the upcoming years.

Less than a week ... [Oct. 28th, 2010|10:20 am]

Less than a week until elections. I heard on the radio this morning that over a 1/3rd of people are still "undecided". Do you know who you are voting for?

"It is important that the LGBT community understand the stakes in this election. While it can sometimes feel as if progress on issues of equality is slow, it will be non-existent if the Republicans take control of Congress next year. The more socially-conservative Republicans would do everything they could to block pro-LGBT presidential nominees for high-level positions in the government and on the federal judiciary. It is certain that the Republicans would attempt to quash the president's efforts to allow gays to serve openly in the military and his push to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act. And there is almost no chance that a Republican Congress would allow the Employment Non-Discrimination Act to become law." -Eric Rader

Most people do not vote in "off year" elections. But now more than even it is important for LGBT community to get ready, get informed and VOTE

BTL needs everyone to help right now. Our 2010 Michigan Voter Guide is now available electronically, and the 24-page printed version will be available this Friday. The printed version will be distributed with BTL newspapers during the next two weeks. Unfortunately, due to budget restraints, we are unable to mass mail the guide after having done so for the past 12 years. We need to count on everyone we can reach through the internet to help distribute this important resource link. And that includes all of you who are receiving this email. Please share the link with everyone you can. Below are a few resources we have for connecting folks.

First, please check out the electronic edition available (PrideSourceVotes.com). Just put your zip code in and your electronic voter guide will appear. Scroll the page to see the choices we have made available. Please distribute this link to as many people as you can via your Websites, Blogs, Facebook, Email and other social media. Second, please help get the word out by posting any of these button/banner ad links for the voter guide ASAP - http://www.pridesource.com/article.html?article=43594

During the next three weeks help us get the word out through this researched Pro-Equality Voter Guide. BTL did its own research and collaborated with Equality Michigan PAC, LAHR-PAC and Kalamazoo Alliance PAC to bring you the most current information about the candidates running in our upcoming election. Please help us make good use of this research by using the guide when you go to the polls on Nov. 2 (and making sure your family, friends and co-workers have this guide too).

An open letter to Michigan attorney general Mike Cox [Sep. 30th, 2010|11:52 am]

Dear Mike Cox,

I recently watched a segment on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 (find the clip at http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/09/28/michigan.justice.blog/index.html?hpt=C1). After viewing this segment I have also read various local newspapers to learn more about the issue. I must say that I am completely outraged at the conduct of Andrew Shirvell. It disheartens me to believe that my tax dollars are going to this kind of behavior. Regardless of whether Shirvell is making these actions "on the clock" or on his personal time, you have to see as a representative of the legal and justice system of Michigan that his exploits are out of line. These actions of stalking, slander, libel, harassing and cyber bullying go against what the office of the attorney general stands for. I see no action that Chris Armstrong has done to warrant this attack. It is clear that Shirvell is using his position to push his religious, ideological and highly discriminatory beliefs. He shows a lack of decency or understanding of national and state laws regarding this matter. This is not a matter of free speech, but a matter of hate speech. This does not belong in our government or in our community. As a tax payer and voter, I request that Andrew Shirvell to be fired or even prosecuted for his actions.

Sincerely,
David Ano

You don't say, the military discriminates. [Aug. 18th, 2010|02:46 pm]

You don't say, the military discriminates.

Retired Army Lt. Col. Bob Maginnis was on NPR's "Tell Me More" arguing that the US military is inherently discriminatory. He argues that if you can be rejected from service for medical reasons, age, citizenship, political association and to some limitation gender, that they should be able to discriminate against gays.

If you are gay ... why would you want to join an organization that openly hates you and discriminates indiscriminately???

With all the news about the Mosque at Ground Zero and California's Proposition 8, I thought this country was built on equal and individual rights. But I guess I was wrong. Apparently, there were some corrections to the Declaration of Independence that most people do not see unless they look at the original ...

Kagan confirmed, hammers nail into Prop 8's coffin. [Aug. 5th, 2010|04:55 pm]

Senate Confirms Kagan To Supreme Court

"The U.S. Senate by a 63-37 vote on Thursday confirmed Elena Kagan as the nation's 112th Supreme Court justice and its fourth-ever female member"

http://n.npr.org/NPRI/jN122424857_547709_547708_Z.htm

This is great news ... follow me for a second. While she was the Dean of Havard Law School, Kagan upheld a policy barring military recruiters from the Office of Career Services, because she felt that the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy discriminated against gays and lesbians. Yesterday, a Federal Court Judge ruled that California's Proposition 8 was unconstitutional under the 14th amendment for equal protection and due process of law. There was a similar ruling last month in Massachusetts over the Defense of Marriage Act. Attorney for the defense in both cases have promised to appeal the decision and take it to the Supreme Court. Today, the US Senate confirmed Kagan to Supreme Court ... so I have no doubt in my mind that if Prop 8 or DOMA make it to the Supreme Court, Kagen will rule against these discriminating laws.
